Chiropractic and pregnancy is interesting. The Chiropractor field is the medical field that specializes in fixing or adjusting and monitoring chronic back and spinal issues. Pregnancy is when a woman is about to reproduce and is the nine months where the child is growing within her womb.

Almost all women who are reproducing experience side affects of that said reproduction time period. Although there is a common list of what they should feel typically not all women experience those generic pains, and almost all women experience their own unique side affects. Whether those are in the form of cravings, nausea or back pains.

One that hasn’t been typically common is back pain amongst pregnant women. Many doctors are starting to wonder why and are beginning to look into this are theorizing that because of the added weight and water of the womb and child affects the back and spine position which causes the discomfort. This discomfort when experience 24 hours is cause enough to send a pregnant woman to a chiropractor’s office.

Not only are these symptoms uncomfortable but they can also be dangerous to the health of the mother and the child. Causing a severe change in the spinal cord can have sever affects on the ability of motion in a person’s body. Thus it is common that many women will start going to a chiropractor during pregnancy.

For women who already have a history of back problems, they simply continue to go to their chiropractor’s office. However, they should consult their doctors as they get further in their term. And for some women they say it also helps them mentally.

For some women going to a chiropractor is mental as well as physical. They go and even if nothing is physically changed, they feel a sense of relief. This is believed that they experience what some people refer to as stress placing syndrome. This is where people believe that stress physically manifests itself into a part of their body.

Although, that’s a pretty big if. Although chiropractic is a part of the medical field there has been no scientific study that links together health benefits of pregnant women that go vs pregnant women that do not. It is recommended for women who did not already have a chiropractor and are pregnant to consult a physician before going, because not all treatments work for all people.

Most people wouldn’t put chiropractic and pregnancy together in the same sentence, let alone think of mixing the two in real life. However, some woman claim many health benefits from going. While others don’t believe in it nor do they feel they need it. Most women feel certain symptoms, while almost all women experience symptoms that are unique to them and that specific pregnancy.

Did you know that back pain will affect 80-90% of every single one of us in our lifetime? That is a staggering number if you think about it. Why is this? Well, there happened to be many reasons. One is the simple fact that we carry two thirds of our weight above her waist. Many studies have shown that degeneration or arthritis can occur much sooner in two legged mammals versus four-legged mammals. A man who weighs 180 pounds carries roughly 120 pounds above his belt line. So, every time he bends over, and then straightens up, he lifts 120 pounds plus whatever it is he is lifting. This is the reason why most back injuries occur by simply bending over to pick up a pencil.

It doesn’t seem possible that a pencil could injure your back, but in reality it’s a pencil +120 pounds.

As if carrying two thirds of your body weight wasn’t hard enough let’s now look at what you’re picking up off the ground. Physics shows us that a 5 pound weight when held at arms length in front of the body as a force equal to 50 pounds. When you bend over to pick an object up off the ground the entire force of the weight of that object is put right into your low back. Picking a 20 pound bag of groceries up off the ground improperly is equal to 200 pounds. At that to the 120 from our last example and you’re asking for trouble.

Too add another pickle to this equation, most all of us that live on the east side and in Bellevue, have jobs where we sit for long periods at a computer or a desk. This lack of movement creates quite a lot of problems for our backs in part because it puts our backs in a very vulnerable position. Putting the back in a flexed posture, or a slouch, is one of the worst positions we can possibly be in, and we do it for hours on end.

In order for us to fully understand why your low back has such a high potential for injury is important that we delve into some basic anatomy. When a human being is born the spine is made up of 33 individual bones. At the age of 18 five of those bones fuse to make up bone called the sacrum, which becomes the base of the spine and 4 of them for fuse to make up the coccyx, or the tailbone. This leaves five lumbar, or low back, 12 thoracic, or mid back, and seven cervical, or neck vertebrae. each of these bones is stacked on one another much like children’s building blocks to form a tower and connected together by a shock absorbent pad that we call the disc, and two small joints called facets. If we look at what normal should be the low back should carry roughly 80% of our weight in the front and 20% in the back. The problem is most people’s abdominal muscles are a bit out of shape an entire pelvis tips forward. This creates too much of a curve in the low back and overloads the small joints called facets leaving them extremely vulnerable to injury. The shock absorbing pads called disks become injured when we do combinations of bending, lifting, and twisting.

OK, enough about anatomy. What can we do to reduce the chances of having periodic low back pain? Obviously, staying in shape is very important. Certain muscles of the body must be tight to keep us upright or standing. These muscles need to be stretched on a regular basis. For example: the hamstring muscle. We’ve all had to perform hurdler types of exercises and remember how tight they feel!

We realize that you have a choice in where you choose for your healthcare services. If you, one of your family members, or a friend have low back pain, we would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to help them find freedom from their pain.

Even as I speak right now the snow was falling in Bellevue, and with snow comes shoveling of that snow. This is a seasonal activity that I categorize as "have to" activities as opposed to "want to" activities. Being that the snow is falling now let's talk about the seasonal activity of shoveling snow.

There comes that time of year, every single year, where we have to do physical activities that we may not necessarily want to do, but really have no choice. Even as I speak right now the snow was falling in Bellevue, and with snow comes shoveling of that snow. This is a seasonal activity that I categorize as “have to” activities as opposed to “want to” activities. Being that the snow is falling now let’s talk about the seasonal activity of shoveling snow. The neat thing about this talk is that even if snow is not an issue where you live, this information can also be used in your gardening, digging, or any other yard related activities.

First, a few facts that help us appreciate why back pain is so common when we shovel:

1. When we bend at the waist, two thirds of our body weight is being held up and lifted and that’s not to mention what your arty lifting. Now this means that 180 pound man has to lift 120 pounds of body weight every time he bends over.

2. a 5 pound weight equals 50 pounds if you hold it out in front of you, now think about the 10 or 20 pound weight on the end of your shovel.

3) Our legs are much stronger than our back and arms. If a person can bench press 300#, they can usually leg press 500# – almost 2x more weight. Yet, most of us use our arms, not our legs, when shoveling.

4) Most of us bend over using poor technique, lift the shovel with the arms and back (not the legs), and rapidly extend and twist the back when we throw the substance from the shovel – 3 bad things!

5. To make it all worse we do the same things over and over and over again, with bodies that are not in proper shape to be doing the activity in the first place. So, what do you do about it?

One way to prevent injuries, especially to the low back is to avoid the activities that injure it in the first place. For those of us who can’t hire the neighborhood kid to shovel the driveway here are some basic tips. The first fact is, we can’t change the fact that 2/3rds of our body weight is above our waist. What we can change right now is just how much you load up that shovel with snow or dirt. Secondly, always bend down using your strong leg muscles, not your back. This reduces the strain that is put on the back while lifting. Take multiple breaks and switch sides so you don’t “beat up” the same muscle groups repeatedly.

If you do hurt your back – using an analogy of a cut on your skin -avoid picking at the cut so it can heal. If your back hurts after shoveling, use ice/rest followed by gentle stretching and modified activities – DON’T go back out and shovel (ie, don’t pick at your cut!). Some wise considerations for shoveling include warming up before starting, staying “in shape” by regular exercise throughout the year, maintaining a good nutritional diet and getting enough sleep.

Sometimes people wrongly think that certain physical ailments are only attributed to aging or only afflict older people. When it comes to back pain, they couldn’t be more wrong. While low back pain definitely afflicts the elderly and aging, it can also affect a healthy adult or even a teenager or child.

The back consists of many different parts. Down its centre is the spinal column, which holds the back in place and also protects the spinal cord and its adjoining nerves. The spine is made up of different types of vertebrae, each of which are separated by round cartilage pads called discs. There are also ligaments and tendons that hold the vertebrae in place and connect the muscles of the back to the spine. Vertebrae are divided up into parts such as the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and root or sacrum. The lumbar area of the back is where low back pain happens.

There are many causes for low back pain and most are dependent on the type of pain a person is feeling in their back. The length of time the pain continues is what determines whether back pain is acute or chronic. However terrible it may sound, back pain that lasts less than three months is considered acute or temporary. Chronic back pain lasts longer than three months.

Many things can cause the spine to experience low back pain. Posture, obesity, weight gained due to pregnancy and a poorly kept physical condition also attribute to back pain. Simply losing weight and living a healthy active life can greatly improve the health of the spine and back.

There are other conditions that cause low back pain, and many of these include trauma to the back. Car accidents that jar the body and whip the torso around can hurt the back. So too can overstretching of the back or attempts to carry something too heavy. These types of trauma can make the discs in the spinal column bulge outward, as well as irritating the nerves involved in the back itself. Back trauma can also result in muscle irritation and bone lesions. On their own, these can be difficult to deal with but they may heal. Untreated, they can develop into much more severe conditions.

One of the major challenges regarding low back pain is that if it is serious, and goes untreated, it can easily become another disorder altogether. Sciatica, for example, is caused by herniated or ruptured discs that press on the sciatic nerve that runs down the spinal column to the pelvis. The pain of sciatica is shock like or burning back pain that goes through the buttocks and travels down one leg, sometimes as far as the knee.

Americans pay almost fifty billion dollars tending to back pain each year. Men and women experience low back pain in equal numbers, and though old age can cause conditions like osteoporosis that result in back pain, even teenagers can experience it. Gardening, housework, improper posture when lifting things and even something as benign as bad sleeping positions can cause people to experience shooting or stabbing back pains as well as lowered flexibility and an inability to bend or stand up straight.

Whether back pain is a result of trauma or just seems to happen, any kind of low back pain that persists longer than a few days should be treated by a doctor. Back pain that doesn’t heal on its own could become something more serious. Visit a doctor if you have any questions, to avoid an improper diagnosis of something more severe.

Normally people wrongly consider certain physical ailments are only attributed to aging or only afflict older people. When it comes to back pain nyc, they couldn’t be more wrong.
