Millions of Americans deal with low back pain on a daily basis. Young to middle-aged individuals are often affected with degenerative disc disease, which can cause back pain on a daily basis. It may have some days where it’s not bothersome at all and others where the patient cannot get out of bed.

The intervertebral disc is a structure that is made up of 80% water normally and sits between the bones of the spine at every level going up and down. Each one acts as a shock absorber and is very effective when a person walks or runs or jumps at dispersing those forces properly if healthy.

Studies have shown that over 40% of individuals over the age of 40 have some level of degenerative disc disease. It may not be painful at all and in fact in most individuals there is no back pain even if degenerate disc disease is present on x-rays or MRI.

For individuals who do have horrible back pain from degenerative disc disease the initial question to answer is “Why is this problem affecting me?”

Those who develop degenerative disc disease do not always have it from an injury. It may be luck of the draw from genetics causing dehydration and degeneration of one or several disc spaces leading to loss of height and bulging discs and pain.

In other patients, there may have actually been a trauma to the back which led to degenerative disc disease subsequently. The person may have also had a herniation of a disk with subsequent surgery and degenerative changes progressively afterwards. This is extremely common.

Initial treatment of back pain from a degenerative disc should involve the basics such as activity avoidance and over-the-counter pain medications. The person should avoid the activity that incites the pain, such as if jogging makes it worse then maybe switch over to swimming or cycling.

The anti-inflammatory medications or over-the-counter can make a huge difference in handling the back pain properly. They should always be taken to court the manufacturers dosing recommendations, as taking too much can lead to an ulcer.

Additional treatments if these initial parts don’t work would include treatment with the chiropractor, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture or spinal decompression therapy. These treatments can be simultaneously put into action think and work very well while at the same time having a low risk row profile.

For instance, chiropractic treatment has been shown to have over an 85% satisfaction rate in America and also a very high level of lasting results. Spinal decompression therapy has been shown to have over 85% effectiveness for good to excellent results. Spinal decompression therapy is low risk, highly effective, and cost less than 5% of that of spinal surgery.

Physical therapy can help individuals with core strengthening and lumbar stabilization along with active and passive ranges of motion. The home program can also be talked to the patient which can help reduce future episodes of back pain.

Along with these treatments, seeing in interventional pain doctor can help immensely. Chronic opiates for low back pain is not the best idea, as the risks are substantial. They can be utilized however as a short-term option effectively to decrease acute exacerbations of back pain.

Injection treatments for low back pain may work exceptionally well. One treatment that is not used much anymore his burning inside part of the disc which was known as intra-diskal electric thermal treatments.

Some pain doctors will inject steroid medication and numbing medicine into the disc itself and this has a fairly low risk to it but the benefit has not been truly shown. Along with degenerative disc disease, individuals often have facet related pain due to the abnormal motion.

For this reason, facet treatments such as facet injections and radiofrequency ablation often provide excellent benefit. There are some stem cell clinical trials being performed with stem cell injections into the intervertebral disc, and this is showing some promise.

These treatments utilize fine themselves or in conjunction have shown to work well for the gender disc disease. Aerobic exercise has been shown to probably be the best option. Over 85% of patients with degenerative disc disease are able to successfully avoid surgery.

Other than these nonoperative treatments, surgery for a degenerative disc is truly a last resort option. The outcomes for surgery tend to be rolled the dice for degenerative disc disease, and the person may only get rid of part of the pain or be worse off than before.

Inversion therapy is a treatment that involves anti-gravity. A person’s feet are put into some sort of tight shoes, and the individual hangs upside down in search of pain relief. Does it work? Is it safe?

The theory behind inversion treatment is that it alleviates gravitational pressure off of the spine such as the disks and nerve roots. The intervertebral space is increased during the anti-gravity treatment. The treatment is in reality a form of spinal traction, with one’s own body weight providing the traction.

Inversion therapy has been found to be effective for short term back pain relief. There have been some well designed research studies evaluating it for long term relief. Unfortunately these studies have shown it to be ineffective for longer relief. In conjunction with a comprehensive treatment protocol for back pain, inversion therapy may fit in nicely to assist with pain relief.

When individuals hang upside down for the inversion therapy, it may raise one’s blood pressure. So for those who have a problem with blood pressure or heart disease, it should not be part of a treatment plan. Otherwise, it appears to be safe.

The same risk factors hold true for glaucoma, which involves elevated intra-ocular pressure. This could be exacerbated with upside down inversion treatment.

Inversion therapy does not have to be 90 degrees, it may be done at less of an angle. Treatment may be achieved twice a day for 20 minutes at a time. Those who are new to inversion treatment should probably angle at 30 degrees to start for a few weeks until comfortable with the treatment. Most people do not need to go beyond 60 degrees to achieve full benefit.

Will inversion treatment help with a bulging disc? The answer is probably not. Yes inversion may pull arthritic joints and disc spaces apart, allowing patients to feel symptomatically better for a period. However, it is not like the intermittent traction with spinal decompression therapy where a negative pressure is created in the intervertebral disc. This negative pressure brings in increased nutrients and oxygen to the disc, allowing for potential healing.

Can inversion treatment help relieve the pain from sciatica? Probably yes. The reason is it can in fact pull the disks temporarily apart, which may relieve the pain from a pinched nerve. But as stated, there is no clear evidence that inversion treatment will suck back in a herniated disk.

The bottom line is that inversion therapy may provide back pain relief short term but long term relief has not been shown in studies. The pain from sciatica may be alleviated, but like back pain it is temporary.

The beginnings of low energy laser therapy occurred in Russia and Europe in the early 1960′s. The effects from this therapy are due to low irradiation intensities and are not due to any effect of heating up tissues.

A significant amount of research has been done over the past few decades showing laser treatments for musculoskeletal problems to be effective, non-invasive, and safe.

Animal studies have shown laser therapy may help with recovery after acute injury and reduce edema (swelling) along with increasing tissue of healing wounds. In animal studies, healing rates of injured tendons in animals have shown substantial improvement too.

One substantial finding was that wounds treated with laser displayed elevated tensile strength, and wounds on the other side not treated with laser showed benefit too. This was deemed to be due to a general effect on the body of having the laser treatment with some type of tissue growth factor being released into the blood. More research is necessary in this area to separate out exactly which factor is being released.

In human studies along with animals, laser treatment has been shown to facilitate collagen production which enhances tendon healing. Laser irradiation on a daily basis has been shown to decrease wound inflammation by 20-30%. This occurs partly by decreasing the amount of prostaglandins in the region, which are components of inflammation.

Low energy photon laser therapy has shown clinical indications for shoulder tendonitis, heel spurs, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. One of the proven effects involved the improvement of local microcirculation, which enhances wound healing. In animals, this could explain why broken bones treated with laser healed quicker than controls.

Small scale human studies of patients with osteoarthritis in either the knee or spine displayed over a 90% excellent pain relief with low level laser therapy.

Studies in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis undergoing laser therapy have displayed that 2/3 of individuals benefit, which potentially gives it substantial advantages over steroid injections and NSAIDS. For low back pain, low level laser treatment has shown excellent results for pain emanating from a number of anatomic areas with low side effects. Compared to control group, laser was doubly effective and also came back only half the time.

Used along with chiropractic treatment, lasers may provide great results for a wide range of painful conditions such as tendonitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even post-surgical scarring problem regions. Compared with surgical treatment, laser therapy is outpatient, low cost, and does not promote scarring.

Spinal decompression therapy offers a non-invasive treatment for folk suffering from a herniated disk or bulging disc. Standard traction devices that were used in the past to treat back pain have been replaced by technologically advanced spinal decompression tables.

What are the causes of a herniated disk?

In between the vertebrae in your backbone can be found flexible, squashy, spinal discs that are shielded by a harder surface layer. This layer surrounds the soft nucleus that allows for cushioning and the smooth movement of your backbone, like shock absorbers for your car. When one of the spinal discs becomes compressed between the bones in the spine, it can make the squashy material of the disk become herniated through the disc and press on the nerves in your lower back or neck. This bulging or herniated disk causes friction from direct contact with nerve endings. Herniated disk is also frequently called slipped or ruptured disk.

As the body grows older, especially if a person leads an inactive lifestyle without much activity to keep the backbone limber and flexible, the discs can degenerate and become flattened. The spinal disc can become brittle if the degeneration is allowed to progress, which can potentially make them more susceptible to injury.

A herniated disk can be caused by a strain from twisting the back rigorously. This injury can happen anywhere on the spine, but it most generally occurs in the lumbar region or the neck. The patient will feel discomfort in the location where the disk has been ruptured and they could have shooting agony down their legs or their arms.

Symptoms of herniated disk

There are many tell-tale signs of a herniated disk. The patient begins to feel shooting pains from the back down into the legs. There may be tingling and numb sensations in the legs and hands from the nerves being pushed down. The agony can fluctuate from mild to intense dependent on the situation of the hurt disk and degree of injury.

Decompression: a safe, non invasive treatment option

Spinal Decompression is a leading edge technology that is safe, non-invasive, and approved by the FDA to treat spinal conditions such as herniated disc and other agonizing conditions effecting the spine. Designed to alleviate the pressure from the herniated disc and compressed nerves by slowly and softly stretching the backbone at a certain angle followed by cycles of partial relaxation. This pattern of distraction and relaxation creates a “vacuum effect” or negative intra-disc pressure.

Relieving the compression on the disk may lead to the herniated or bulging disk to retract or get sucked back in the protective annulus therefore removing the pressure from the nerve that was causing the agony and numbness.

The repetitiveness of gradually stretching and then relaxing the spinal discs over the course of one or two visits to the Chiropractor’s office, allows oxygen and nutritious fluids to flow into the disk allowing the damaged discs to start the recovery process.

Spinal decompression treatment is a non-surgical treatment for precise back pain conditions, including:

- Degenerative disc disease
- Facet syndrome
- Herniated disc
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Neuralgia
- Pinched nerve
- Sciatica
- Spinal stenosis
- Bulging disc
- Numbness & Tingling

Is decompression a painful procedure?

Spinal decompression is a pain-free, non-invasive care that mitigates back pain and neck pain. The patient will be strapped in to the machine and the straps are connected to the computer, which softly separates the backbones with a specific stretching force. The treatment is so snug that many patients really go to sleep.

Months and usually even years before initial impact, the late effects of car injuries can arise. Typically, the patient seeks the advice of his doctor for say, a growing weakness in arm or leg or severe and sickening headaches. X-rays and body scans can reveal changes to the spinal column from old injury. The doctor or orthopedic specialist may announce that your neck or back is AT RISK, which means that degeneration is taking place.

The spine is divided into three sections. They are the lumbar, thoracic and cervical (neck). There are no less than 24 vertebrae and 110 joints making up the spinal column through which vital nerves and the even more important spinal cord travels. Alterations in vertebrae, the discs between them (like cushions) and joints can all cause great pain and even changes to certain bodily functions; particularly when nerves become pinched or pressure is placed on the cord. Whiplash is the leading injury sustained during motor vehicle accidents and deterioration may only be noticed months or years later.

Symptoms can be varied, as it depends on which C level (cervical), T level (Thoracic) or L level (Lumbar) has been injured. There may be morning back stiffness (revealing inflammation), pain in the hips, neck, shoulder, temple area or occipital skull area. Feeling constantly weary, with body aches and pains and even buttock and thigh pain may occur. One herniated disc or more, may be present.

Your doctor will see to your pain relief and suggest exercises in an attempt to keep you supple and build bone. You will most likely be placed on anti-inflammatory pain medication. Nature tries (but not without causing pain) to stabilize injuries to the spine by arthritic changes, bony protuberances called osteophytes and creating constrictive muscle-spasms.

Signs of importance to your orthopedic surgeon or doctor will include whether or not you have changes in primary bodily functions, numbness, pain or tingling in the outer extremities of your limbs, and perhaps a feeling of constriction of the chest. He will test the gripping strength of your hands, for example and note where exactly you feel discomfort. The disorder could go from acute to chronic and back over a long period of time interfering with daily activities, including your work.

As an adjunct to the care your doctor provides, he will no doubt refer you to a physiotherapist. Her expertise in gentle manipulation, massage, heat therapy, and gentle acupuncture using laser needles will become essential to the management of your pain. She may encourage you to use a back brace or cervical collar from time-to-time to warm and support your body. As stress can play a part in worsening symptoms, you may be placed on tranquillizers or even anti-depressants. Anti-depressants play a role by bringing your pain level down. A firm mattress and orthopedic pillow is also essential.

It may become necessary to have surgery at some stage. This is useful in restoring mobility to say, damaged knee or hip joints. Fusion of the cervical area is a last resort. Your physician will probably want you to have pain-reducing blocks or Rhizotomy treatments instead. Fused vertebrae only cause temporary relief as other vertebrae and joints take over their work. Alternately, the spinal level involved may be too high (at C1 and C2 for example) for fusion.

Unfortunately for the sufferer, the late effects of car injuries are usually not taken into any great consideration when insurance claims are paid out. That minor whiplash which invariably evolves into degenerative disease with time could handicap you to the extent that you cannot work.

Disc bulge pressure relief using spinal decompression traction therapy is a tried and true method to relieve back pain resulting from a disc herniation. Spinal decompression traction is helpful for the relief of back pain due to disc related nerve pressure and relieves aching back and muscle tightening.

Spinal decompression mechanical traction treatment is a all natural therapy for the treatment of back and leg pain. There are little contraindications and can be used on most patients suffering from disc injury such as disc bulge or disc herniation, back pain and muscle spasm.

Spinal decompression therapy is performed on the therapy bench with the patient face up using secure straps and a harness around the pelvis. A separate set of straps go around the patients chest.

Spinal decompression traction functions by mildly separating the bone of the spine and spinal column relieving any associated disc pressure and joint pressure.

The spinal disc decompression motion gently separates and releases gradually. The spinal bones and related anatomy is gently stretched relieving compression forces on the spinal joints and disc pressure.

Spinal decompression mechanical traction helps relieve tight low back muscles by breaking the muscle spasm. Muscles relax and decrease the pain signal.

All patients are given a button to interrupt traction therapy any time the patient may feel pain. Most patients feel very comfortable with spinal decompression therapy and feel immediate relief when the disc related nerve pressure is reduced.

Spinal decompression mechanical traction therapy can last from 20 to 40 minutes depending on several factors such as the patients age, disc injury or any other health factors.

Contraindications not to use spinal decompression traction are: infections, tumors, fractures, loss of sensation.

Chiropractic and pregnancy is interesting. The Chiropractor field is the medical field that specializes in fixing or adjusting and monitoring chronic back and spinal issues. Pregnancy is when a woman is about to reproduce and is the nine months where the child is growing within her womb.

Almost all women who are reproducing experience side affects of that said reproduction time period. Although there is a common list of what they should feel typically not all women experience those generic pains, and almost all women experience their own unique side affects. Whether those are in the form of cravings, nausea or back pains.

One that hasn’t been typically common is back pain amongst pregnant women. Many doctors are starting to wonder why and are beginning to look into this are theorizing that because of the added weight and water of the womb and child affects the back and spine position which causes the discomfort. This discomfort when experience 24 hours is cause enough to send a pregnant woman to a chiropractor’s office.

Not only are these symptoms uncomfortable but they can also be dangerous to the health of the mother and the child. Causing a severe change in the spinal cord can have sever affects on the ability of motion in a person’s body. Thus it is common that many women will start going to a chiropractor during pregnancy.

For women who already have a history of back problems, they simply continue to go to their chiropractor’s office. However, they should consult their doctors as they get further in their term. And for some women they say it also helps them mentally.

For some women going to a chiropractor is mental as well as physical. They go and even if nothing is physically changed, they feel a sense of relief. This is believed that they experience what some people refer to as stress placing syndrome. This is where people believe that stress physically manifests itself into a part of their body.

Although, that’s a pretty big if. Although chiropractic is a part of the medical field there has been no scientific study that links together health benefits of pregnant women that go vs pregnant women that do not. It is recommended for women who did not already have a chiropractor and are pregnant to consult a physician before going, because not all treatments work for all people.

Most people wouldn’t put chiropractic and pregnancy together in the same sentence, let alone think of mixing the two in real life. However, some woman claim many health benefits from going. While others don’t believe in it nor do they feel they need it. Most women feel certain symptoms, while almost all women experience symptoms that are unique to them and that specific pregnancy.

As any doctor or expectant mother will tell you, it’s critically important to ensure that you have quality prenatal care during pregnancy. Unfortunately, few women seem to understand the incredible benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy, both for themselves and baby.

The visible biomechanical changes that a woman goes through during pregnancy are fairly extreme. Her musculoskeletal system is continually adapting to the changes brought on by the growth of the child inside her. As a consequence, many women experience pain in their lower back and hips. Regular chiropractic care can help a woman’s body to remain aligned, in addition to maintaining optimal nervous system function.

As a woman’s belly continues to expand and grow, her center of gravity changes. In many cases, these changes happen too fast for her back and pelvis to accommodate, thus resulting in considerable discomfort and spinal subluxation (a partial dislocation or misalignment of a bone at a joint). This is compounded further, if a woman’s back and pelvis were out of alignment before the pregnancy. A subluxated pelvis can negatively affect the position of her growing child.

Spinal / Pelvic subluxation can also interfere with the proper functioning of the uterus. A woman’s uterus is connected to the pelvis by ligaments, which help to support the uterus and keep it in proper place. Additionally, these ligaments provide support for the uterus as the child inside continues to grow. A pelvic subluxation can cause these ligaments to become strained, directly affecting the position of the uterus. As a consequence, the child is left in a less-than-optimal position.

Chiropractic treatment during a pregnancy could prevent a potential cesarean section by aligning the pelvis to enable the woman to give birth natural. This also decreases the amount of stress placed on the uterus, so it could reduce the stress the baby feels. If you have any further questions regarding the benefits of chiropractic treatment, please feel free to call our office at New Century Spine Centers in San Diego.
