Back Pain NYC; Why Is It So Common?

This question has plagued all of us, including researchers for a long time! Could it be because we’re all inherently lazy and don’t exercise enough? Or maybe it’s because we have a job that’s too demanding on our back? To properly address this question, here are some interesting facts:

The prevalence of low back pain (LBP) is common, as 70-85% of ALL PEOPLE have back pain that requires treatment of some sort at some time in life.

On a yearly basis, the annual prevalence of back pain averages 30% and once you have back pain, the likelihood of recurrence is high.

Back pain is the most common cause of activity limitation in people less than 45 years of age.

Back pain is the 2nd most frequent reason for physician visits, the 5th ranking reason for hospital admissions, and is the 3rd most common cause for surgical procedures.

About 2% of theUSworkforce receives compensation for back injuries annually.

Similar statistics exist for other countries, including theUKandSweden.

So, what are the common links as to why back pain is so common? One reason has to do with the biomechanics of the biped – that is, the two legged animal. When compared to the 4-legged species, the vertically loaded spine carries more weight in the low back, shows disk and joint deterioration and/or arthritis much sooner, and we overload the back more frequently because, well, we can! We have 2 free arms to lift and carry items that often weigh way too much for our back to be able to safely handle. We also lift and carry using poor technique. Another reason is anatomical as the blood supply to our disks is poor at best, and becomes virtually non-existent after age 30. That makes healing of disk tears or cracks nearly impossible. Risk factors for increased back injury include heavy manual lifting requirements, poor or low control of the work environment, and prior incidence of low back pain.

Other risk factors include psychosocial issues such as fear of injury, beliefs that pain means one should not work, beliefs that treatment or time will not help resolve a back episode, the inability to control the condition, high anxiety and/or depression levels, and more. Because there are so many reasons back problems exist, since the early 1990’s, it has been strongly encouraged that we as health care providers utilize a “biopsychosocial model” of managing those suffering with low back pain, which requires not only treatment but proper patient education putting to rest unnecessary fears about back pain.

Spinal Decompression Therapy for Back Pain NYC

Back pain, sciatica, herniated disc and leg pain can often result from long term chronic low back pain. Some patients experience only some of these symptoms and in many cases some experience all. If you’re suffering with chronic low back pain, herniated disc or sciatica spinal decompression may be an alternative that can help when other methods have failed. Generally speaking, the first line of medical defense is prescriptions drugs such as anti inflammatory meds and muscle relaxers. When these fail some patients may try physical therapy or chiropractic care for their low back pain.

If you’ve tried all of this and still are experiencing pain and discomfort of varying degrees you may be a candidate for spinal decompression therapy. Spinal decompression therapy is a reincarnation of old antiquated traction therapy. The main difference is that this type of therapy utilizes advanced computer technology to sequentially adjust to muscle tension in the spine. This results in a deeper ‘pull’ and unloading of painful nerves and discs.

Millions of Americans deal with low back pain on a daily basis. Young to middle-aged individuals are often affected with degenerative disc disease, which can cause back pain on a daily basis. It may have some days where it’s not bothersome at all and others where the patient cannot get out of bed.

The intervertebral disc is a structure that is made up of 80% water normally and sits between the bones of the spine at every level going up and down. Each one acts as a shock absorber and is very effective when a person walks or runs or jumps at dispersing those forces properly if healthy.

Studies have shown that over 40% of individuals over the age of 40 have some level of degenerative disc disease. It may not be painful at all and in fact in most individuals there is no back pain even if degenerate disc disease is present on x-rays or MRI.

For individuals who do have horrible back pain from degenerative disc disease the initial question to answer is “Why is this problem affecting me?”

Those who develop degenerative disc disease do not always have it from an injury. It may be luck of the draw from genetics causing dehydration and degeneration of one or several disc spaces leading to loss of height and bulging discs and pain.

In other patients, there may have actually been a trauma to the back which led to degenerative disc disease subsequently. The person may have also had a herniation of a disk with subsequent surgery and degenerative changes progressively afterwards. This is extremely common.

Initial treatment of back pain from a degenerative disc should involve the basics such as activity avoidance and over-the-counter pain medications. The person should avoid the activity that incites the pain, such as if jogging makes it worse then maybe switch over to swimming or cycling.

The anti-inflammatory medications or over-the-counter can make a huge difference in handling the back pain properly. They should always be taken to court the manufacturers dosing recommendations, as taking too much can lead to an ulcer.

Additional treatments if these initial parts don’t work would include treatment with the chiropractor, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture or spinal decompression therapy. These treatments can be simultaneously put into action think and work very well while at the same time having a low risk row profile.

For instance, chiropractic treatment has been shown to have over an 85% satisfaction rate in America and also a very high level of lasting results. Spinal decompression therapy has been shown to have over 85% effectiveness for good to excellent results. Spinal decompression therapy is low risk, highly effective, and cost less than 5% of that of spinal surgery.

Physical therapy can help individuals with core strengthening and lumbar stabilization along with active and passive ranges of motion. The home program can also be talked to the patient which can help reduce future episodes of back pain.

Along with these treatments, seeing in interventional pain doctor can help immensely. Chronic opiates for low back pain is not the best idea, as the risks are substantial. They can be utilized however as a short-term option effectively to decrease acute exacerbations of back pain.

Injection treatments for low back pain may work exceptionally well. One treatment that is not used much anymore his burning inside part of the disc which was known as intra-diskal electric thermal treatments.

Some pain doctors will inject steroid medication and numbing medicine into the disc itself and this has a fairly low risk to it but the benefit has not been truly shown. Along with degenerative disc disease, individuals often have facet related pain due to the abnormal motion.

For this reason, facet treatments such as facet injections and radiofrequency ablation often provide excellent benefit. There are some stem cell clinical trials being performed with stem cell injections into the intervertebral disc, and this is showing some promise.

These treatments utilize fine themselves or in conjunction have shown to work well for the gender disc disease. Aerobic exercise has been shown to probably be the best option. Over 85% of patients with degenerative disc disease are able to successfully avoid surgery.

Other than these nonoperative treatments, surgery for a degenerative disc is truly a last resort option. The outcomes for surgery tend to be rolled the dice for degenerative disc disease, and the person may only get rid of part of the pain or be worse off than before.

Many pregnant ladies say they can’t do without one!

Never ignore your back pain. Some individuals completely ignore their own health. They try to merely walk their back pain off. Unfortunately, lower back pain isn’t that an easy task to eliminate. Attempting to move a lot of during pain can just worsen it. Attempt to relax before pain eases up.
When moving an item, try to push it rather than pulling. If you need to move a large item, stand near it while tightening your ab muscles, and push with both arms. By pushing the product, you might be making use of your stomach muscles, as opposed to pulling, which put intense strain on your back, possibly causing you to injure yourself.

If you’re coping with lumbar pain, the first inclination might be to get around about the couch; instead, move. Whenever you sit still for too long durations, your joints become stiff. This could improve your level of pain and cause healing to slow. Acquire some simple exercises and you are prone to feel good, faster.

Use ergonomically designed chairs. Chairs with good back support you don’t must battle to be in and out of may help protect your back. A great chair provides good support and ease any back pain by looking into making sure not to create more force on your back and neck.

When working at the desk or computer, be sure you sit inside the proper posture or purchase an seats. Be sure to wake up and walk around and loosen muscle tissue. It is much easier to keep them from getting cramped as opposed to hoping to get out your cramps in your back.

The magnitude of money used for low back pain connected problems is in the tens of billions per year in the US. Sometimes low back pain is caused by obesity so one solution is to achieve a considerable weight loss. So many men and women have had perhaps some form of uncomfortable experience with low back pain, regardless of whether it was a one time occurrence. Traumas and pain to the lower back, or medically called the lumbosacral region, is one of the foremost causes of job related disability benefits and missed work. If you are having a hard time, you can use Grow Taller 4 Idiots to grow taller and like what other people have been using to lose weight. When it pertains to issues that are neurologically similar in the US, only head pain beat back pain. The variety of prospects can be from a quick strain that persists a day or two up to the most critical injuries that can cause surgery.

The standard situation with low back pain includes a number of factors each of which make their particular contribution. Low back painfulness can be attributable to disc ruptures, situations relating to using back muscles too much plus all kinds of other problems. Excessive stress can be subjected to the back from physical imbalances that easily put too much strain and tension on the lower back, or any other back area. This is one of the ways to grow taller. Then at some point that imbalanced state contributes to more serious problems including a greater chance of back injury. We have all been aware of, or maybe experienced, back injuries brought on by the smallest activities.

There are a number of different varieties of pain we can encounter. There is the sort that is acute discomfort felt instantly. Discomfort that is more chronic could be sharp or low in severeness, but it is difficult simply because it is chronic and always present. The acute kind of back pain is likely to happen suddenly from physical shock. These can be significant as this suggests a condition in which there’s actual damage, typically. The general signs for this sort of pain can be a piercing painful feeling that really gets your particular attention. Occasionally the condition will keep the person from moving about normally for example bending over or standing up straight. Whenever this happens we normally make adjustments like walking with a tilting foward position to relieve back pain.

Herniated discs in the spinal column are common and normally caused by recurring motions or those kinds that require chronic mechanical vibration. Another reason for this affliction could be a quick load placed upon the back or a serious strain on the back that is seldom done. Plenty of things help with back health like being too tight, on the whole, due to not enough good exercise and stretching. A herniated disc will be very debilitating because it can quite often pinch a nerve around the spinal column.

If you experience back pain that is persistent it is advised to see your doctor about it. If you are engaged in an activity that results in sharp pain, then the smart thing to do is see a competent doctor. In that kind of situation, you can easily make matters more painful and cause more damage if you continue to act like there is no problem. Always remember to lift with your legs and not your back, and always keep your back straight when you lift.

Medical professionals use the term sciatica & leg pain to refer to discomfort caused by the sciatic nerve in the lower back. The pain can affect the lower back, buttocks, leg and foot. Patients often suffer pain in any one of these areas or in any combination. It is considered to be a symptom of some other underlying medical condition. Patients need to be treated for the underlying condition which is diagnosed based on the part of the nerve that is affected.

In general, symptoms only affect one side and can include all or only some of the lower back, buttock, leg and foot. Although in rare cases it has been known to occur on both sides. The discomfort can vary from mild to severe and cause numbness, muscle weakness, tingling or pins and needles and mobility problems with the leg.

Symptoms that require urgent medical intervention can include problems with the bowel/bladder and a progressive loss of power in the leg. A medical examination will usually determine the most appropriate course of treatment. That could mean surgery to release the nerve that has become trapped.

Treatments can vary, depending on the part of the sciatic nerve that is affected. It is important to obtain a professional medical diagnosis before commencing any type of treatment. Undertaking treatment or exercises without a confirmed diagnosis can do more damage than good. Particularly, if you are using the wrong type of treatment.

In many cases the sciatica may resolve itself without the need for interventions. It can and often does return with increasing frequency, until the patient is in almost constant pain. However, only in very severe and debilitating cases will surgery be recommended. Most cases will be treated conservatively with pain relief, physiotherapy and in some cases patients will be recommended to try acupuncture and massage therapy.

Patients who suffer from this condition will find that the discomfort levels increase when they are on their feet or when they are sitting for a lengthy period. Many report that the pain increases when they are sitting and they only find some relief when they are horizontal. Patients can develop problems with their ability to move around when the ailment becomes severe.

Sciatica is generally considered by the medical profession to be a mid-life problem. Sciatica & leg pain have been known to appear in individuals as young as twenty, but is rare. It is less likely to occur in elderly patients unless they have had a history of sciatica when they were younger.

In America, the most common reason for spine surgery in individuals over the age of 65 is lumbar spinal stenosis. What is it? Spinal stenosis represents a narrowing of the area available for the dural sac (spinal cord remnant) and the nerve roots emanating from it. Typically, there is plenty of room for both the dural sac along with the bilateral nerve roots coming out at every level of the spine. There is actually enough room for these to be bathed in cerebrospinal fluid and be comfortable.

Arthritis sets in as people get older. Along with the spinal arthritis comes potential overgrowth of the soft tissues and bone as a result. This may begin to pinch on the amount of space available for the nerve roots and dural sac. If it’s bad enough, people may start having buttock, back, and leg pain. This is actually a structural problem. Thankfully, most individuals with spinal stenosis do not have severe resulting pain.

Resulting symptoms can occur from this overgrowth leading to reduced blood flow or excitement of nerve roots from the inflammation. This may result in several levels being affected. They symptoms vary between individuals depending on the region of pinching and the person’s reaction. In spite of all this, lumbar spinal stenosis is the most common reason for spine surgery in individuals over the age of 65.

What if pain exists, should surgery be done? This question has been debated for decades since spinal stenosis really is a quality of life condition. It doesn’t kill anyone, and the severity of symptoms should guide treatment. If the symptoms do not improve despite nonoperative pain management for 3 to 6 months, a decompressive surgery may be considered. Some evidence has shown limited effectiveness overall for this surgery.

A recent Spine article looked at numerous high quality studies in the literature to determine how well laminectomy decompressions work for stenosis. The results showed that in those who failed nonsurgical measures, surgery helped with pain, quality of life, and function more than simply conservative treatment. It did not, however, statistically help with walking ability.

These benefits slightly decreased over the years, but did not go away completely, even up to a decade. Beyond a decade was not reviewed. These results continued despite obesity, older age, lung issues, or other medical issues. The addition of comorbidities raised the risks of complications from surgery, so they should be weighed into the mix to decide the benefits versus the risks and whether or not to proceed with surgery.

The results were similar among almost every study evaluated, including whether or not the patient had one vertebra slipped on another, known as spondylolisthesis. The main issue is it’s a quality of life decision, and substantial conservative treatment should be attempted first.

Surgical risks in this age range cannot be ignored, even though they are small. At that point when nonoperative treatment fails, however, a number of high quality studies support the decision for a simple lumbar decompressive laminectomy.

Low back pain is a very common condition with up to 80% of the people experiencing back pain at some point during their lives. Back pain has substantial impact on our lives and on the economy due to time taken off work.

While most of those with back pain recover within six weeks, some will go on to develop protracted back pain and a loss of functionality — especially if the discomfort is left undiagnosed and untreated by a qualified physiotherapist.

What is the cause of lower back pain?

Most back pain is the results of irritation or poor function of the bones, joints, ligaments or muscles in your back. Such irritation can be the result of vertebral dysfunction, an event that results when the spinal backbones compress and irritate the delicate nerve structures of your lumbar region.

Other causes include muscle strain, sciatica, disc herniation, degenerative changes, inflammatory arthritis and breaks due to osteoporosis.

Other conditionscausing lower back pain include cancer, serious sickness and compression of the spinal cord. lower back pain can even occur from emotional, “psychosocial” and stress issues.

In all cases, get your back trouble diagnosed as soon as possible at a physiotherapy facility you have confidence in.

How can you cope with and/or prevent lower back pain?

Avoid too much rest. It is easy to feel you should stop moving and lie in bed all day. But in most situations, you should remain active. Research supports the benefits of moving about as soon as possible after your injury. Get involved in gentle activity like swimming, walking and, of course, a selection of physiotherapy exercises

Stay Fit. One of the most highly efficient paths to fight low back pain and prevent it from occurring is to remain physically fit. The stronger your aerobic fitness, the better oxygen delivery you’ll get to your muscles, and the less sensitive you will be to pain responses in your back. Be sure to exercise at least 30-40 minutes every second day – you’ll feel great and help your back at the same time.

Don’t remain in the same position for over thirty minutes. If you spend most of your day working at your desk or driving a vehicle then you’re upping your chances of being affected by a bad back. Remember the joints in your back need to move. The more they move, the more fit they are. Be sure to get up and stretch at regular intervals, take walks, or at a minimum shift your body position each 30 minutes.

How can a physiotherapy clinic aid you with your back pain?

Physiotherapy treatment of lower back pain can restore function to poorly moving spinal joints, as well as reduce muscle stress and raise your muscle strength. The results are improved movement, decreased nerve irritation and reduced pain.

Most treatments will be adapted to your individual case, following your complete physiotherapy review and diagnosis.

Your physiotherapy facility should offer these lower back pain treatments:

Irritation management modalities including some elements of electrotherapy, ultrasound, laser and acupuncture.

Exercise- dependent on the diagnosis, may include range of motion (ROM), adaptability, bracing, endurance, and functional exercise

Manual therapy- soft tissue and joint mobilizations to help scale back stress and joint stiffness

Education- including posture, correct exercise, prevention, body mechanics and pain management.

The theme of physical consequences as located inside this study, describes an very varied loss of physical function, or disability, as a direct result of low-back pain, which extended into personal, social and work circumstances.

The variance of impacts was concordant with other study exactly where limited social functioning has been established as a variable associated with care-seeking behaviour (Ferreira 2009) and work loss, a common repercussion of disabling low-back discomfort (Walsh 1992). Both of these phenomena as described within this theme had been consequences of the disabling nature of low-back pain, which was a consistent obtaining within participants.

Physical consequences manifested by participants describing themselves as no longer becoming able to perform certain activities. This bears similarity to other investigation which has suggested disuse, which means a reduce in physical activity levels to be one of the main physical consequences of low-back discomfort, also associated with the development of far more chronic disability and chronic pain (Hasenbring, et al. 1994 and Vlaeyen, et al. 1995). Thus osteopathic patients appear to react to low-back pain within the very same way in which other healthcare professional patient’s do.

Also discussed within the theme was the disuse of activities which one participant described as being needed for the maintenance of his health. This phenomenon has also been described inside other study, exactly where decreased physical activity levels are suggested to result in a decrease in physical fitness levels and cause obesity, decreased muscle strength and cardiovascular capacity (Musacchia, 1988;Greenleaf, 1997); a phenomenon typically referred to as physical deconditioning (Bousema 2007).

It is hard to establish regardless of whether these osteopathic patients had been displaying the phenomenon of disability. What they were displaying was a self-reported loss of prospective fitness, which might or may possibly not be related to actual physical conditioning. However it might need to have to stay a consideration that osteopathic patients potentially suffer from deconditioning as a result of their low-back discomfort.

The clinical implications of that are that despite the fact that disability might manifest in quite a few types, osteopathic patients show forms of disuse behaviour, which may result in prospective physical de-conditioning, disability and chronic discomfort.

This disuse behaviour requirements to be recognised by practitioners and efforts made to restore function towards the patient. Failure to do so may possibly extend the recovery time and have negative repercussions on patients’ well being.
